Boston Pops
August 2009
For Typography II, we were asked to design a poster for the Boston Pops’ Summer 2009 concert series using only typographic elements.
I first organized all the information of show times, summaries, and composers. The first task was to provide all the essential information, without repeating anything unnecessarily. I then set up the information in a grid format chronologically. I wanted this portion of the poster to focus on clarity and understanding.
Next I went about designing the background of the poster, which should be more visually engaging. The gradation of the circles are meant to mimic the Hatch Shell. The colors are reminiscent of summer, but are muted enough to allow the smaller black type to be easily read. The shared “O” of Pops, Boston, and the “Hatch Shell” create a relationship of the poster as a whole. “Summer 2009” aligns with the “T” of “BOSTON.”
Finally, the two distinctive layers create visual interest when viewed closely or from a distance.
